The Top Five Questions A Shop Owner Will Want Answered Before He Purchases Your Handmade Product

Author: Dana Klopfer

Thinking of selling your handmade custom jewelry wholesale? Be prepared for that first meeting with a shop owner. Here are the top five questions you should be prepared to answer from the shop or boutique owner.

1. What is required for a minimum order?
Minimum may be a dollar amount or product amount. Make sure you know which way will benefit you most and result in the highest possible profit.

2. Do you currently have any specials now.
This is perhaps the best way to get business ASAP. For example, maybe you could say that if you buy 20 pieces now I will give you 1 piece at zero cost. Or maybe you could offer free packaging for each piece. Almost anything will do as long as you are comfortable with it and the store owner feels as if he/she is getting a 'deal'. The key is to get them to sell your product and see how successful it is for them, and want them to want more, more, more!

3. What are your delivery/shipping dates?
Hopefully if the owner is asking you about shipping dates it is because they have already purchased from you and they are anticipating big business. Make sure you know your time frame on handmade items. Let them know you will be by or call once a week to see how sales are. Work out what is best for you.

4. Always have literature and product.
Never, never forget business cards with several ways to get a hold of you, brochures with price list (not your cost) & pictures, and of course, some actual product.

5. What are your terms.
In other words, how do you want the shop owner to pay for your items. I prefer to get paid up front. This way you have already been paid and the shop owner may sell your item at his discretion.

Do not be surprised if a shop owner wants to purchase what you have on the spot! You just may have to run home and make more all night long! Just the big business you want for your stay at home business! Make sure you exude confidence and also be prepared for let down. Some may love your product and some may not, but never give up. The possibilities are endless. Shop owners always want unique, beautiful items.
